About IP DaVinci

Built from decades of working with patent figures.

IP DaVinci grew from more than 30 years of practical patent-drawing experience—and a simple observation: the people closest to patent work should have better ways to create, review, revise, and communicate figures.

What we bring together

Patent Drawing Experience Practical Training Purpose-Built Tools Professional Support

Why IP DaVinci Exists

Patent figures are part of the work. Working with them should be too.

Patent attorneys, agents, paralegals, inventors, engineers, and researchers work around patent figures every day.

Yet even relatively simple figure changes often require another handoff—to a drafting professional, outside vendor, or someone else with the tools to make the revision.

The Observation

After more than three decades working with patent drawings, one pattern kept appearing:

The people closest to the invention and the patent application often had the least direct control over the figures.

The Everyday Reality

Small changes can create surprisingly large workflows.

01
A figure needs a revision.

A reference number moves, a callout changes, a component is added, or an inventor provides updated source material.

02
The change becomes a handoff.

Instructions have to be prepared, communicated, interpreted, returned, and reviewed—even when the underlying revision is small.

03
Another review cycle begins.

If the result is not quite right, the same communication loop starts again.

04
Simple work consumes more time than it should.

Professional drafting remains valuable, but not every patent-figure task needs to become a drafting project.

The Insight

The problem was not that patent professionals needed to become professional patent illustrators.

They needed practical patent-figure capability of their own.

IP DaVinci®

Give people direct capability for the work they can reasonably handle—and keep professional drafting available for the work that requires it.

The Missing Capability

Working with patent figures is different from becoming a patent illustrator.

Most patent professionals do not need another profession. They need practical control over a recurring part of the work they already do.

Patent-figure capability means being able to understand, review, revise, create, and communicate around figures directly when the task is appropriate.

Patent-Figure Capability

The practical ability to work directly with patent figures as part of the patent-development process.

What That Means

Enough capability to stay closer to the work.

01
Understand Know how patent figures are constructed.

Understand figure structure, editable objects, reference elements, source material, and the practical standards that shape patent drawings.

02
Review Review the actual figure, not just an exported image.

Work with editable figure files so changes can be evaluated more directly and precisely.

03
Revise Handle appropriate revisions directly.

Move elements, update labels, revise callouts, adjust layouts, and make other routine changes without turning every modification into another handoff.

04
Create Develop appropriate figures from structured workflows.

Create common figure types using reusable tools, templates, and methods instead of beginning from an empty drawing every time.

05
Communicate Make visual collaboration more direct.

Give attorneys, inventors, engineers, support teams, and drafting professionals a clearer visual language for communicating what needs to change.

The Boundary Matters

Capability does not mean doing everything yourself.

Some patent-figure work is routine. Some is specialized. Some requires the judgment, efficiency, or execution of an experienced drafting professional.

The goal is not to eliminate professional drafting. It is to make the decision about when to use it more intentional.

The Model

Direct capability where practical. Professional support where valuable.

Routine Work directly

Review, revise, annotate, communicate, and create appropriate figures internally.

Collaborative Work together

Use editable figures to improve collaboration between patent professionals, inventors, engineers, and drafters.

Specialized Escalate intelligently

Bring in professional drafting when the complexity or value of the work makes specialist execution the better choice.

The Goal

Not to replace the patent-figure professional—but to remove unnecessary dependence on one for every patent-figure task.

From Drafting to a System

The knowledge behind patent drawings can be taught, organized, and reused.

IP DaVinci grew out of more than 30 years of practical patent-drawing work.

Over time, the same techniques, decisions, figure types, revisions, and production problems appeared again and again. What looked like individual drafting tasks contained repeatable methods.

01 Experience

Start with the real work.

Patent drawings were created, revised, corrected, and prepared across thousands of practical situations—working from inventor sketches, photographs, screenshots, existing figures, technical documents, and other source material.

Observe What actually happens in patent-figure production.
02 Patterns

Identify what repeats.

System diagrams, flowcharts, image tracing, GUI figures, graphs, tables, annotations, reference numbers, and revisions may look different from project to project, but much of the underlying work follows recognizable patterns.

Recognize Repeatable figure types, techniques, and decisions.
03 Methods

Turn experience into workflows.

Instead of treating every figure as a completely new drawing problem, those recurring patterns can be organized into practical methods that can be followed, taught, improved, and repeated.

Codify Make the practical knowledge transferable.
04 System

Put the pieces together.

Skills alone are not enough. Templates alone are not enough. Training alone is not enough. The pieces become more useful when they work together as a practical patent-figure environment.

Build IP DaVinci Patent Figure System™

The Shift
Before Knowledge lives with the specialist.
IP DaVinci Knowledge becomes tools and workflows.
After Capability can live inside the organization.
The Idea

Turn decades of practical patent-drawing knowledge into capability that other people can actually use.

What We Believe

Better patent-figure work starts with better capability.

IP DaVinci is built around a simple idea: give people more practical control over the visual part of patent work.

That does not mean everyone should do everything. It means the people closest to the invention and the patent application should have useful capability of their own.

01

Capability

People should be able to work directly with the figures they depend on.

Attorneys, agents, paralegals, inventors, engineers, researchers, and support professionals should not need a specialist for every appropriate review, revision, annotation, or figure-development task.

02

Editability

The figure should remain something you can work with.

Editable figures preserve control. They make revisions, collaboration, reuse, and future development easier than workflows built around static outputs alone.

03

Standardization

Repeatable work should have repeatable methods.

Common figure types and recurring production tasks should not require reinventing the process every time. Tools, templates, and workflows can make good methods easier to repeat.

04

Collaboration

Visual work improves when the people who understand the invention can participate directly.

Better tools and editable figures can shorten the distance between inventors, engineers, patent professionals, support teams, and professional drafters.

05

Professional Judgment

Capability and professional drafting belong together.

Internal capability should handle work where it makes practical sense. Experienced drafting professionals should remain available when complexity, efficiency, or specialized execution makes them the better choice.

Our Approach

The goal is not maximum outsourcing or maximum self-sufficiency.

It is the right capability, in the right hands, for the right work.

Built Around the Work

Start with patent figures. Then teach the tools needed to work with them.

IP DaVinci is not general-purpose drawing or software training with patent examples added afterward.

The system starts with the actual work surrounding patent figures—how they are created, revised, organized, communicated, and prepared—and builds the tools and methods around those tasks.

The Starting Point

The question is not:

Software First What can this drawing tool do?
Instead
Patent Work First What does this patent-figure task require—and what is the most practical way to do it?

Real Figure Work

The system is organized around recurring patent-figure tasks.

Different inventions produce different figures, but many of the underlying production problems repeat.

01
Structure System diagrams & flowcharts

Organize technical relationships, processes, components, and information flows into clear editable figures.

02
Source Material Image tracing & figure development

Work from photographs, screenshots, sketches, PDFs, existing drawings, and other technical source material.

03
Interfaces GUI & screen-based figures

Develop clear representations of interfaces, screens, states, and other software-related visual material.

04
Information Graphs, charts & tables

Convert technical information into structured, consistent, and editable patent-figure formats.

05
Detail Reference numbers & annotations

Add, organize, revise, and maintain the visual information that connects figures to the patent application.

06

About the Founder

Built from more than three decades of patent-drawing work.

IP DaVinci was founded by Mike Oljaca after more than 30 years working with patent drawings and the people responsible for developing them.

The system grew from a practical question: how much of the knowledge used every day in professional patent drafting could be organized so other patent professionals could use it themselves?

Mike Oljaca, founder of IP DaVinci

Mike Oljaca

From doing the work to teaching the system behind it.

For more than three decades, Mike has worked directly with patent drawings—creating figures, interpreting technical source material, responding to revisions, and helping turn inventions into clear visual representations for patent applications.

That work provided a close view of both sides of the patent-figure process: the specialized drafting work itself and the communication that takes place between inventors, attorneys, patent agents, support professionals, and drafters.

Over time, a recurring gap became difficult to ignore. Patent professionals depended heavily on figures, but many had never been given a practical system for working with those figures directly.

IP DaVinci grew from the effort to close that gap—not by replacing professional patent drafting, but by making more of its practical knowledge accessible, teachable, and usable.

Today IP DaVinci®

A system for putting practical patent-figure capability into more hands.

Founder Perspective
“The goal isn't to turn everyone into a patent illustrator. It's to give people enough capability to work directly with patent figures when it makes sense.”

Mike Oljaca Founder, IP DaVinci®

The Work Now

Put practical patent-figure capability closer to the invention.

Today, the focus of IP DaVinci is broader than producing individual drawings.

It is about helping patent professionals, inventors, engineers, researchers, and organizations develop the skills, tools, workflows, and support structure to work with patent figures more effectively themselves.

Experience → Capability

The experience began with drawing patent figures. IP DaVinci exists to make the knowledge behind that work more useful to everyone involved in the patent process.

How We Work With Organizations

Start with the work you actually need to improve.

Patent-figure capability does not need to be introduced everywhere at once.

We start by understanding how figures currently move through your organization, where practical capability would help, and which people should have it.

Start Where It Matters

The right starting point depends on the organization.

For one team, the priority may be making routine figure revisions internally. For another, it may be improving inventor-to-counsel collaboration, standardizing drawing workflows, or giving members access to practical education.

The program should follow the need—not the other way around.

A Practical Path

Understand. Focus. Implement. Support.

01 Understand

Understand the current workflow.

We look at how patent figures are currently created, reviewed, revised, and exchanged—and which people participate in that process.

Key Question How does figure work happen today?
02 Focus

Identify where capability would help.

Not every drawing task belongs internally. We identify the recurring work where greater internal capability, better tools, or clearer workflows could provide practical value.

Key Question What should your people be able to handle directly?
03 Implement

Put the system into practical use.

The appropriate people receive access to the relevant training, tools, templates, workflows, and practical instruction needed for their work.

Key Question Who needs which capability?
04 Apply

Use it in real patent work.

Capability becomes useful when people apply it to actual figures, revisions, inventor materials, and recurring production tasks—not when it remains isolated inside a training course.

Key Question Is the capability becoming part of the workflow?
05 Support

Keep help available beyond the system.

Training and tools do not eliminate the need for specialist help. IP DaVinci Studio remains available for complex, specialized, or time-sensitive figure work.

Key Question What should remain with experienced drafting professionals?
06 Expand

Expand only where it creates value.

A successful starting point can extend to additional people, teams, offices, departments, clients, or members when there is a practical reason to do so.

Key Question Where would the capability be useful next?

Different Starting Points

There is no requirement to begin with a large program.

A Few People Start with the people closest to the work.

Give selected attorneys, agents, paralegals, engineers, researchers, or support professionals direct access to the system.

A Team Build a shared working method.

Introduce common tools and workflows across a practice group, IP team, research group, or technology-transfer function.

An Organization Establish broader internal capability.

Standardize access, training, resources, and support across a larger group when the need extends beyond one team.

Clients or Members Extend capability beyond your own organization.

Firms and associations can also explore programs that make patent-figure education available to clients, members, or other professional communities.

The Boundary Matters

Internal capability does not mean doing everything internally.

Handle Directly

Routine revisions, appropriate figure creation, annotations, source-material preparation, review, and other work your team is equipped to handle.

Escalate

Complex, specialized, high-volume, time-sensitive, or unfamiliar work where professional drafting remains the more practical choice.
