Figure Development

Disclosure visuals and patent figures are related — but they are not the same thing.

Some disclosure material may eventually become the basis for patent figures. Some may need to be redrawn, simplified, reorganized, traced, or formalized.

Other material may never appear in the application, but may still have helped counsel understand the invention.

The value is not measured by how many disclosure images become filed figures. The value is preserving useful technical information for the people developing the case.

Preserve Editability Where It Helps

Some visual information can continue instead of being recreated at every stage.

Not every research image can or should be editable. Photographs and many scientific images naturally remain raster source material.

But diagrams, process illustrations, system maps, conceptual figures, and similar material can often benefit from remaining in an editable working format.

That makes it easier to annotate, rearrange, simplify, develop, and review the same visual information as the patent work progresses.
