Better patent figures can start before the drawing begins.
Inventors and engineers already create sketches, diagrams, CAD views, screenshots, photographs, and other technical material. Preparing that material more intentionally can give patent counsel a much stronger starting point.
Patent Source Material
A patent figure does not have to begin with a blank page.
Long before patent counsel begins developing formal figures, inventors and engineers often already have visual information describing the technology.
It may have been created for engineering, research, design reviews, internal presentations, testing, documentation, or simply to explain an idea.
That material may not be ready for a patent application, but it can still be extremely useful as source material.
Source material does not need to look like a patent drawing to contain information valuable to patent work.
The Real Objective
Don't ask inventors to become patent drawing professionals.
Better source material does not mean asking engineers and inventors to learn every patent drawing convention or prepare finished formal figures.

At the source-material stage, understanding matters more than polish.
Inventors sometimes hesitate to provide rough drawings because they do not look professional.
But early patent work often benefits more from a clear, informative sketch than from a polished illustration that leaves important relationships unexplained.
Formalization can happen later. The first job is to preserve technical understanding.

Organize What You Provide
A collection of files is not yet a visual explanation.
Patent counsel may receive dozens of screenshots, photographs, CAD exports, presentation slides, and sketches for a single invention.
The material becomes more useful when the inventor identifies what each item shows and why it matters.
Even simple organization can reduce the amount of interpretation required during patent intake.
Keep material relevant to understanding the invention.

Explain what each item represents.

Don't make patent counsel guess what they are supposed to notice.
A photograph, CAD view, or screenshot may contain far more information than is relevant to the invention.

The annotation does not need to be final patent terminology. Its purpose is communication.
Add Meaning
Show More Than One View
One image rarely explains every important aspect of an invention.
Different views can communicate different kinds of technical information.
A system overview may explain architecture. A detailed view may explain a particular component. A sequence may explain operation. An alternative view may reveal another embodiment.
Thinking in views helps the patent team understand what visual information may eventually be needed.
Show the overall system or structure.
Show an important component or relationship.
Show sequence, movement, or process.
Show another configuration or embodiment.
Editable When Practical
Source material becomes more useful when the next person can continue working with it.
A screenshot or PDF can communicate an idea, but it may also force the next person to reconstruct the information before making changes.
When practical, editable diagrams and working files make it easier to move, simplify, relabel, annotate, reorganize, or develop the visual information further.
That can turn source material into the beginning of a continuing visual workflow.
