FOR RESEARCHERS & TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OFFICES
Clearer invention figures — faster disclosures and handoffs
A standardized Microsoft Visio-based workflow (training + templates + support) that improves disclosure figure quality, speeds review, and reduces redraw cycles — designed for non-drafters.
💡 Cloud Workspace available for Mac, iPad, and locked-down environments (browser-based access).

What Is the IP DaVinci System?
I built the IP DaVinci Patent Drawing System™ to help university researchers create clear, standardized invention figures in Microsoft Visio — without needing drafting experience or specialized design software.
After 30+ years in the patent drawing ecosystem, I saw the same pattern across research teams: researchers, faculty, and TTO staff rely on slides, screenshots, whiteboard photos, and sketches because they aren’t trained in patent drawing workflows or tools. Turning those into clear, structured figures takes longer than it should — and often triggers confusion, rework, redraws, and repeated revisions during disclosure and filing.
IP DaVinci solves this at the system level by combining:
- Role-based Training (so non-drafters become productive fast)
- Toolkit Templates + Stencils (so structure and standards are built in)
- DaVinci Cloud Workspace (Windows + Visio in the browser for Mac/locked-down IT)
- Studio Services (outsourcing for complex, time-sensitive, or overflow work)
The result is faster figure creation, clearer communication, and smoother collaboration — because researchers, staff, and counsel work in the same editable Visio source file instead of passing static images, markups, and redraw instructions back and forth.
Training (Starter Package)
Structured, role-based training that teaches the essential Visio skills, patent drawing standards, and figure-specific drawing techniques needed to produce patent-ready drawings within a standardized system.
Toolkit (Starter Package)
Visio templates and stencils that enforce patent-ready standards while accelerating figure creation and keeping drawings consistent and editable across matters.
Maintenance & Support (Annual)
Optional annual plan that keeps the Toolkit current, provides drawing/system support, and includes Studio credits.
DaVinci Cloud Workspace (Optional)
Managed Windows + Visio in the browser when local installs aren’t practical (Mac, iPad, Linux, locked-down environments).
Studio (Optional)
Expert drawings for complex or time-sensitive cases — fully compatible with the same system.
What universities achieve with one shared invention figure system
Clarity first. Speed follows.
Accelerate disclosure-to-filing readiness
Standardized invention visuals reduce clarification cycles and speed review between researchers, TTO staff, and outside counsel.
- Cleaner invention disclosures with fewer follow-up questions
- Faster patentability review and decision-making
- Shorter time from disclosure to drafting kickoff
Improve disclosure clarity and figure consistency
When figures follow a repeatable structure and standard format, inventions are easier to evaluate, communicate, and protect.
- More complete, patent-ready visual narratives
- Less ambiguity in inventor-to-counsel handoffs
- Consistent output across labs, departments, and research groups
Reduce redraw cycles and wasted effort
Move beyond slides, screenshots, and hand sketches — and keep drawings editable through revision cycles instead of rebuilding from scratch.
- Fewer redraws during drafting and amendment cycles
- Revisions happen in the same editable source file
- Less back-and-forth between researchers and counsel
Create reusable invention visuals
When invention figures are created in an editable standard, they become reusable assets for related filings and ongoing research commercialization.
- Figures reused for continuations and related applications
- Easier updates as research evolves
- Better continuity across student turnover and lab transitions
Where campuses use the system
One standardized workflow across research, disclosure, and commercialization.
Invention Disclosures
Create clear, structured figures that make disclosures easier to understand and evaluate — reducing ambiguity, follow-up questions, and time-to-decision.
Disclosure Review & Go/No-Go Decisions
Help TTO teams review faster with consistent, readable invention visuals — even when disclosures come from different departments, labs, and inventors.
Counsel & Vendor Handoff
Provide counsel with usable, editable figures early so drafting starts from clean inputs instead of reconstructed sketches — minimizing redraw cycles and vendor dependence.
Revision & Continuity
Maintain drawings in a single editable file so updates happen quickly as experiments evolve, embodiments expand, or claims change — without rebuilding figures for each revision.
SYSTEM ADOPTION
The Default Adoption Path
Start with the system. Add support or services only when needed.
The IP DaVinci System Adoption Path:
- Start with the Starter Package, which includes Training and the Toolkit.
- Keep Maintenance & Support active annually to receive Toolkit updates, system support, and Studio credits.
- Add Cloud Workspace only when local installs aren’t practical (Mac, iPad, Linux, locked-down IT).
- Use Studio only when you want drawings done for you.
Start with the Starter Package
Everything you need to adopt the system and produce patent drawings yourself.
- ✔ Training to learn the workflow.
- ✔ Toolkit with templates and stencils.
- ✔ One-time purchase. You keep what you receive.
Add Maintenance & Support
Optional annual plan for active production use.
- ✔ Toolkit updates and refinements.
- ✔ Drawing and system support.
- ✔ Studio credits included.
Add Cloud Workspace when installs aren’t practical
Run Windows + Visio in the browser for mixed-device or locked-down environments.
- ✔ Ideal for Mac, iPad, Linux, and restricted IT setups.
- ✔ Keeps the same system and file compatibility.
Use Studio when you want drawings done for you
Delegate complex, high-volume, or time-sensitive work.
- ✔ Uses the same system.
- ✔ No redraw or compatibility issues.
Why this matters: You only pay for what you actually need. Own the system outright, keep it current when you’re actively using it, and delegate only when it makes sense.
How campuses typically adopt IP DaVinci
Pilot with one lab + TTO workflow
Start with one PI group, graduate cohort, or disclosure-heavy area and align expectations with the TTO review + counsel handoff process.
Standardize disclosure visuals
Define shared figure conventions so disclosures are easier to evaluate and counsel receives cleaner, editable inputs.
Scale across departments
Expand to additional labs or programs; keep the system current with Maintenance & Support and add Cloud Workspace or Studio only where access/capacity requires it.
Used by research teams and TTO offices
“We can communicate embodiments clearly without turning every disclosure into a drafting project.”
— Principal Investigator, Research Lab
“Clearer figures reduced back-and-forth with inventors and sped up our disclosure reviews.”
— Technology Transfer Officer
“Revising in the same file changed everything — no more redraw cycles when experiments evolve.”
— Graduate Researcher
